A system whereby neighbours were bound for each other's good conduct. Hallam (Hallam H., 1871, The Middle Ages, New York) classifies this as meaning 'every ten men in a village were answerable for each other, and if one of them committed an offence the other nine were bound to make reparation'. The word also means the security given by free-men.
